having finally woken from our deep winter slumber, team fancy human shuffle in through the door of 2016, in need of a shave and a coffee, clutching the newly minted test pressing of the first full release from london duo and co-founders lucatwana. the normally work shy combo deliver to you fh003, or under it s more catchier moniker, city droids. if they d have got it done quicker, we might have been able to cash in on the stars wars related hype, but never mind. anywho, city droids takes the form of three originals, beginning with the uplifting funk of city fucking, moving through the tougher and darker grind of droids on roids and ending with a nod to detroit with nobody knows. pleasingly, we also have a fancy human favourite tigerskin on remix duties, with a smooth, driving, hypno re-imaging of droids on roids that hits the nail firmly on the head.

following eps for creme organization and w.t. records, art crime delivers a four tracker of meltingly good music on pinkman records. chords cascade, blending and reforming, in the warming wonder of still life , dead carnation is from a similar place. keys skipping down scales, dancing down them as percussion lends a touch of weight. distant is the mood changer. rain falls, smoke whirls and the night descends in this dark and intoxicating encounter. but those clouds part for the close. lush pads and soaring notes break through for calming currents of the less than aptly titled hectic . an artist rewriting stereotypes, an ep of true quality.

the next release on lag is from bay area to berlin transplant jamaica suk. the kontort ep (lag006) is another 3 cut record with all original music. the title track kontort is a composition with the big room in mind with thunderous kicks and bass with intricate panning and dub inflections. holographic is a another big room techno workout with a deliciously infectious piano line which allows the producers personality to shine through. depth between waves is a dub techno roller. this track shows restraint till the break then re-emerges with a synth sound that pushes the groove forward in a simple yet undeniable manner.

stunning debut from london based artist forest drive west for livity sound. * system revolves around an irresistible deep and tripping pneumatic broken drum groove, propelling the track through ten tense minutes of foggy atmospherics. * show them is similarly immersive but this time with nods to the densely smoked out uk dancefloors of 2004, austere and hypnotic.

billy nasty’s electrix records launches its 2016 schedule by welcoming back the always impressive, carl finlow. carl is one of dance music’s leading lights and a multi-talented producer across a range of genres, with releases stretching back to the early 90s. well known for the 2020 vision label he launched with ralph lawson, his solo work however has often taken an electro route with releases under various guises like random factor, black labs, voice stealer, silicon scally and scarletron (with daz quayle) on labels including warp, fuel, playhouse, paper, trope, sony, klang, arista, soma, scsi, pagan, minifunk, seventh sign and satamile. it’s been almost 3 years since carl appeared on electrix. his ‘boot loop ep’ became the label’s second release after its re-launch in 2013. but it’s definitely been worth the wait. his ‘electricology 4 ep’ once again shows why he’s a master of the genre. from the tough and funked-up ‘lateral thoughts’, speckled and melodic ‘hyperloop’, squelching, bassy ‘suspect reanimation’ and sinister, beat-driven ‘latext’, right through to the playful ‘atomic level’ (a bonus track for the digital release), the ep shines, with a stamp of high quality running though its core.

electroacoustic experiments and filmic elements define the music that develops instinctively yet irrevocably, a sense of forward motion setting them apart. compositionally minimal, these tracks maximize their inherent potential all the way through to their logical and even illogical end. referencing electronica, ambient, shoegaze and at times modern classical harmonics, monochord builds and unbuilds in a slow heartbeat. introspective and filmic, its quiet and non-confrontational nature makes monochord move in the interzone between various spheres. their music escapes definition and that is its truest definition. its subtle pulse and evocative and drony feel invite and inspire.

‘this is eleanore mills’ was her debut and only album, recorded for the sylvia robinson’s all platinum subsidiary astroscope in 1974. the album was produced by harry ray and al goodman of the moments and tommy keith of the rimshots. it includes some great crossover and modern soul cuts, including the in-demand string laden early soul/disco ‘same routine’ a popular killer cut and ‘i’m gonna get you’ another superb up tempo soul cut. ‘fascinating devastating man’ is a lovely mid tempo track. the album includes some beautiful soul ballads ‘he said goodbye’, ‘how can i love you’ and the heavily sampled ‘telegram’ which she rips up, plus ‘teach me’ an amazing near seven minute opus which picks up a heavier groove half way through.

king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.
